I know most girls favorite thing to do when they get married, or even before the get married, is look at and try on wedding dresses. It can be a fun, but stressful, part of preparing for that big day. It is something all women and girls look forward to, and they should. However, there are some things I would advise to when picking a dress. I have observed from myself and consulted with others. Ten points have come to my attention on searching for a wedding dress:
1. Don't hate it on the hanger
Too many girls pass up beautiful dresses just cause they look a bit different on the hanger. 95% of the time the dress will look much different on then it does on the hanger. Do not be opposed to trying it on... EVER
2. Don't over do it
You don't want your dress to pull more attention than yourself. You and the groom are the center of this occasion and if your dress is more out-there then it needs be, it'll be a distraction.
3. Don't obsess over weddings
Everyone understands that preparing for a wedding is a dream for every girl. However, it is possible to obsess too much over it. Sometimes worrying too much and having too much of an expectation will ruin the day, and may even ruin the relationship. Balance yourself, and be open to new things - and dresses.
4. Don't overshop
It is possible to shop for a dress too much. You may shop around so much, that you will get tired of it and just settke on a dress you may not be in LOVE with. This is never a good thing.
5. Don't shop outside your budget
Don't ever... EVER... try on a dress you can't afford. You may fall totally in love with the dress, but not be able to have it simply because it cost too much. Stick to what your budget is. You'll the dress
6. Don't go unprepared
You do not want to go to a dress shop with absolutely no idea of the kind of dress you want. Look online and in catalogs to at least have an idea of something you would like and want. People can't help you unless you have some sort of idea
7. Don't rely on friends and family
This is your day, and this is your dress. Don't base your decision on what your friends - or your mom - say this is your decision
8. Don't make a dress something it's not
You can alter dresses and make them look a bit different, but just don't redo the whole thing. That's disrespectful to the designer, and it could cause the dress to break under the stress... Literally
9. Don't second guess yourself
If you find a dress you can't live without... Don't second guess and think you'll find something better, chances are most dresses you try on after that will just be a waste of time
10. Don't expose too much
You need to be especially careful with this. It is important to feel sexy and pretty on your wedding day, but don't overdo it to the point where it makes your guests uncomfortable. If you don't fit in the dress, or there is too much innappropriate exposure, alter it, or pick a different dress... For the sake of your guests.
Like I said before: I got these ideas from observing and from other sources. The show Say Yes to the Dress inspired this post, and is an entertaining approach to dress shopping, not a source of advice. Just love your dress and love yourself in it and you won't go wrong.
I got my dress with my mom. Now I want a different dress..Urgh. My mom will kill me if I get another dress...

ReplyDeleteThe price of dresses drives me nuts... and you have to buy it of course, even though you won't ever wear it and probably not even look at it again after the wedding is over. My wife's dress hasn't seen the light of day since she wore it.
